For Those Who Serve

Hello all, and welcome to the middle of August. It is still hot around the country, but a hint of Fall weather can be felt here and there. If you haven't taken a trip to the beach or lake yet, better do it soon!

Ceasefire talks related to the conflict in Gaza continued this week, though no final agreement was reached. The talks in Doha did yield some progress, according to some in attendance, and the United States is attempting to push a bridging measure that can at least get something in motion if even temporarily.

The Navy has notified Congress that it intends to award $11.5 billion in a multi-ship deal for the production of four new amphibious vessels (three San Antonio class Flight II amphibious warships and a Flight I America-class big deck amphibious warship). The Navy estimates that the multi-year and multi-ship procurement will save over $900 million. The ships will be built by HII in Pascagoula, Mississippi. USNI has the full story here

The Biden Administration celebrated the successful negotiation of Medicare prices for ten prescription drugs. The negotiations occurred as part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The negotiations are expected to save the government $6 billion in 2026 and save senior citizens a combined $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket expenses.

Once again, the most significant news of the week is the ongoing incursion into Russian territory by Ukrainian forces. While Russian forces have been able to divert Ukraine's advance in some places, the Ukrainians have simply changed course and advanced in other areas. By Thursday of this week, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces had taken the Russian town of Sudzha, the largest Russian town to be captured by the Ukrainians who now control more than 100 Russian settlements and have taken more than 100 Russian POWs. But Russia may be planning a counterattack on the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk where an evacuation order was issued this week.

AUKUS countries update rules on sharing defense kit - Defense News / August 15

The United States, Australia and the United Kingdom have agreed to new rules for sharing arms — a major step in the ongoing effort to make their defense industries more accessible to one another.

*Ukraine*

Ukraine gambled on an incursion deep into Russian territory. The bold move changed the battlefield - AP News / August 15

Ukraine’s stunning incursion into Russia’s Kursk border region was a bold gamble for the country’s military commanders, who committed their limited resources to a risky assault on a nuclear-armed enemy with no assurance of success.

Great Power Competition

Australia, US look to joint production of hypersonic missile, US lawmaker says - Reuters / August 16

Joint production of hypersonic missiles by Australia and the United States could reduce strain on the U.S. defence industrial base and boost deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region, U.S. Republican lawmaker Michael McCaul said in Sydney on Friday.

FRANK EMPSON / THE TENNESSEAN, NASHVILLE TENNESSEAN VIA USA TODAY NETWORK
Wally Famous Amos, well known for his inimitable chocolate chip cookies, gives an interview at The Tennessean on April 18, 1979.

Wally Amos, an indefatigable entrepreneur who in 1975 took a $25,000 loan from a few friends in Hollywood to start Famous Amos, one of the first brands to push high-quality cookies in its own stores and one of the world’s best-known names in baked goods, died Tuesday at his home in Honolulu. He was 88.

His children Shawn and Sarah Amos said the cause was complications of dementia.

At a time when flavorless, preservative-packed cookies were about the only thing available to consumers not blessed with a baker in the family, Amos’ confections stood out. Derived from a recipe he had learned from his aunt, they used real ingredients, no coloring or chemicals added, and he kept them as close to handmade as possible, even as his company exploded into national distribution through the early 1980s.

“First of all, every day in this audience (“The View” June 25, 2024), it’s a tough conversation to have. The truth is, everybody’s gonna die at some point. Don’t leave it for your kids to deal with. Get a PrePlan, make a will. Do not wait until you die. You’re leaving people in pain at your loss, trying to figure out what you wanted. Tell people what you want before your demise.” Whoopi Goldberg, author, comedienne, actress, EGOT winner (one of only 19), co-host of “The View.”

Whoopi is right. However, a preplan is different from a will. A will is to state who you want to leave any property or money you might have. A Pre-Plan is for you to decide whether you want a traditional/casket or cremation. You can make the decisions now as to where you will be buried, or whether you want to be cremated and your ashes scattered, or whether you want a niche, a family plot, or have your own mausoleum, etc. With a Pre-Plan, you will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. Being prepared is an important part of the life you are living. I can help you prepare yourself for the inevitable no matter when it might arrive. Yes, you can take care of planning your end-of-life now and be sure that your loved ones will be able to follow your personal instructions. If you plan well in advance, you will prevent their suffering and sudden financial costs. Don’t know where to start? Give me a call. I will help you with your Pre-Plan. You will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. Please call me today. I can help you just like I have assisted more than 10,000 Hawaii families and individuals make their plans for cremation or burial. And, if you travel often, you can also purchase a lifetime travel plan for $499 that, in case you should die while away from Hawaii, will pay to bring your body back – a procedure that can cost thousands of dollars and occurs more often than you may think. This is something you can do that is positive and will be of help to family and friends alike.

A Pre-Plan is a very powerful thing to do. So please do this while you still can, and those who love you can celebrate your life with you now, not after it’s too late.
