ECONOMIC AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT - How to effectively lead future teams

How to Break the Procrastination Cycle: It’s Impact on Leadership and Proven Solutions

In the world of leadership, time is one of the most valuable resources. But even the most driven leaders can fall prey to procrastination. While it may seem harmless, procrastination can hinder decision-making, delay progress, and negatively impact the entire team. Understanding the connection between leadership and procrastination is key to overcoming this productivity killer.

The Leadership-Procrastination Paradox

Leaders are often expected to be decisive, confident, and action-oriented. However, like everyone else, leaders can also struggle with procrastination. The difference is that when leaders procrastinate, the ripple effect can be felt across their teams and the projects they oversee. Here are some common ways procrastination can manifest in leadership:

·        Decision Paralysis: The pressure to make the “right” decision can lead to indecision, delaying critical actions.

·        Avoidance of Difficult Tasks: Leaders may put off uncomfortable or challenging conversations, creating unresolved issues that grow over time.

·        Overwhelmed by the Big Picture: When leaders focus on the long-term, they can get bogged down by the enormity of their responsibilities, causing them to avoid taking immediate action.

How Procrastination Hinders Leadership

Procrastination can subtly erode leadership effectiveness in several ways:

·        Loss of Trust: When leaders consistently delay decisions or actions, it can cause team members to lose confidence in their ability to lead.

·        Reduced Team Productivity: Leaders set the ...

Love and the Cabbie

Columnist Art Buchwald and Parris Island Marine ... tells the story of a day when he was riding in a cab in New York City with a friend. When they got out of the cab, the friend said to the driver, “Thank you for the ride. You did a superb job of driving this cab!”

The taxi driver seemed stunned for a second and said, “Are you a wise guy or something?”

No,” said the man, “I’m serious. I admire the way you keep cool in heavy traffic. Not many cab drivers are able to do that. I’m glad I rode in your cab today!”

Yeah, sure,” said the cab driver and he drove off.

Buchwald asked his friend, “What was that all about?”

I am trying to bring love back to New York City,” said the man. “I believe it’s the only thing that can save the city.”

You think one man can save New York City?”

It’s not one man,” said the man. “I believe I have made that taxi driver’s day. Suppose he has twenty fares. He’s going to be nice to those twenty fares because someone was nice to him. Those fares will in turn be kinder to their employees, shopkeepers or waiters, or even their own families. Eventually, the goodwill could spread to at least a thousand people. Now that isn’t bad, is it?”

But you are depending on that taxi driver to pass your goodwill on to others.”

Maybe he won’t,” said the man. “But I might say something nice to ten different people today. If, out of ten, I can make three happy, then I can indirectly influence the attitudes of three thousand or more.”

You’re some kind of a nut,” said Buchwald to his friend.

That shows how cynical you’ve become,” said the man. “Take postal workers, for instance. The reason so many of them hate their work is because no one is telling them that they are doing a good job.”

But they aren’t doing a good job.”

They’re not doing a good job because they don’t believe anyone cares if they do or not,” replied the man.

Buchwald and his friend continued walking down the street and noticed five workmen eating their lunch. The friend stopped and said, “That’s a magnificent job you men have done. It must be difficult and dangerous work.”

The workmen looked at Buchwald’s friend suspiciously.

When will this job be finished?” the friend asked.

June,” growled one of the workmen.

Ah, that is really impressive. You must all be very proud of what you are doing here!”

As they walked away, Buchwald said, “I still don’t think you are doing any good.”

On the contrary,” said the man, “when those workmen digest my words, they’ll feel better about what they are doing and somehow the city will benefit.”

But you can’t do this alone,” said Buchwald. “You’re just one man.”

But I’m not discouraged,” he said. “I’m hoping to enlist others in my campaign.”

They continued walking down the street.

You just smiled at a very plain-looking woman,” Buchwald said to his friend.

Yes, I know,” the man replied. “And if she’s a schoolteacher, her class is going to be in for a fantastic day.”

Where to Take It from Here…

Most of us don’t realize the impact that we can have on the world by sharing God’s love one person at a time. When we do, we can set off a chain reaction that will reap huge dividends for the kingdom of God. You can make a big difference in the world with seemingly insignificant acts of kindness. Just as Jesus took a few loaves and fishes beside the sea of Galilee and fed thousands of people (Matthew chapters 14 and 15), God is able to take the small things we do for him and perform miracles in other people’s lives. Try it and see what happens!

Sent on behalf of Rob Hale, Chair, Centennial Park Committee

Aloha friends,

We are grateful for your past support as a Founder and since I last wrote to you, progress has been made with the 2nd increment of Phase 2 construction – our “Finish the Park” effort!

As you know, this past June, we completed the exterior rock wall on three sides, which will be the foundation for new metal fencing. Just last week, large pōhaku (stones) were placed on site as a foundation for future donor recognition signs.

This week the concrete ADA ramp was poured for access to the raised platform.

If you have comments or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Carolann.

Mahalo and aloha,

Special thanks go to Rick Towill for all of his hard work in the park, including documenting Phase 2 construction progress with these photos.

A message from our President

Nestled on the beautiful shores of Honolulu, our business community thrives in this dynamic and picturesque environment.

When I moved to Hawaii, I found myself without a business network. Joining the Mercury Business Association transformed my experience, providing a platform to meet new people and connect with the local business community. The club has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth through valuable referrals and supportive relationships.

Our mission is to gather and share business information among members, while creating social opportunities to build meaningful connections. We believe in a culture of reciprocity—giving and receiving knowledge and support to help each other thrive.

As president, my goal is to foster an emotionally uplifting and positive environment for all members. We welcome new members and offer excellent educational opportunities through speakers who present on a variety of social and business topics.

If you're interested in contributing to our community and watching your network grow and develop personally, please reach out. Together, we can achieve great success.

Sincerely,

Darshaun Nadeau

First of all, every day in this audience (“The View” June 25, 2024), it’s a tough conversation to have. The truth is, everybody’s gonna die at some point. Don’t leave it for your kids to deal with. Get a PrePlan, make a will. Do not wait until you die. You’re leaving people in pain at your loss, trying to figure out what you wanted. Tell people what you want before your demise.” Whoopi Goldberg, author, comedienne, actress, EGOT winner (one of only 19), co-host of “The View.”

Whoopi is right. However, a preplan is different from a will. A will is to state who you want to leave any property or money you might have. A Pre-Plan is for you to decide whether you want a traditional/casket or cremation. You can make the decisions now as to where you will be buried, or whether you want to be cremated and your ashes scattered, or whether you want a niche, a family plot, or have your own mausoleum, etc. With a Pre-Plan, you will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. Being prepared is an important part of the life you are living. I can help you prepare yourself for the inevitable no matter when it might arrive. Yes, you can take care of planning your end-of-life now and be sure that your loved ones will be able to follow your personal instructions. If you plan well in advance, you will prevent their suffering and sudden financial costs. Don’t know where to start? Give me a call. I will help you with your Pre-Plan. You will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. Please call me today. I can help you just like I have assisted more than 10,000 Hawaii families and individuals make their plans for cremation or burial. And, if you travel often, you can also purchase a lifetime travel plan for $499 that, in case you should die while away from Hawaii, will pay to bring your body back – a procedure that can cost thousands of dollars and occurs more often than you may think. This is something you can do that is positive and will be of help to family and friends alike.

A Pre-Plan is a very powerful thing to do. So please do this while you still can, and those who love you can celebrate your life with you now, not after it’s too late.
