The 2025 Annual Meeting in January held at the Ala Moana Hotel was a chance to welcome new board members, appreciate volunteers, and “above and beyond” members. Sea Cadets receive recognition for achievements in their leadership programs. In attendance were our wonderful partners, along with the University of Hawaii Naval ROTC Midshipman, and the Campbell High School JROTC that presented the colors. Thank you to all who served or have served on our Board of Directors and Community Partners!

Each quarter, the Pacific Fleet Chief's mess holds a luncheon in appreciation and recognition of right-hand Sailors and their accomplishments. The Honolulu Navy League presents plaques to those being recognized.
A right-hand Sailor is a Junior Sailor or Junior Officer, who is the go-to person for a Chief Petty Officer-- always ready, willing, and able to assist when needed to get the job done without ever being asked!
Events like this celebrate the great Sailors at the Pacific Fleet Command, who are doing the right things. It is critical to recognize these special sailors and celebrate in camaraderie. The luncheon is held at the Silver Dolphin Bistro on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam.

|
January 25 members were invited to take a tour of the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG-121). She is an Arleigh Burke-class Flight II, A guided missile destroyer in the United States Navy, the 71st overall for the class.
The ship was named for United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General Frank E. Petersen Jr. the first African American Marine Corps aviator and the first African-American Marine Corps general. The tour and the opportunity to talk with her sailors was indeed a special day!

President's Message
Aloha!
It is indeed an eventful time to serve alongside the Sea Services of the United States in the Indo-Pacific region. Continuing maritime tensions in the Red Sea and South China Sea serve to reinforce the importance of open and secure sea lanes to our state and our nation’s security. Our Sea Services – Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and U.S.-flagged Merchant Marine – continue to operate and keep commerce flowing throughout this challenging time, across the vast and critically important Pacific Ocean.
Hawaii’s economy is reliant on maritime security and commerce, and after tourism, national security is our state’s largest economic sector. The presence of the Sea Services enhances the preparedness and resiliency of Hawaii in the event of external threats or natural disasters. Hawaii benefits from the presence of the Sea Services, and the Sea Services benefit from Hawaii’s strategic location in the central Pacific, and its many vital operating areas and training ranges to maintain their readiness.
For decades, the Honolulu Council of the Navy League has played a unique role in supporting all the Sea Service personnel and their families. As a member, there are many opportunities to engage, learn, communicate, educate, serve, volunteer, and have fun!
We hope that you will consider joining the nearly 2,000 members of our Council and assist us in our important mission.
Sincerely,
Jeff Griffin

Why We Wrote You Next: A Step-by-Step Guide to Taking Charge of Your Career
|
|
Read this article on LinkedIn to join the conversation
|
The inspiration behind writing You Next was rooted in a desire to help people reclaim control of their lives and careers.
Too often, I have seen talented individuals stuck in roles that drain their energy, working for organizations that do not value them, or living in places that no longer feel like home. They stay because they feel trapped, unsure of their next steps, and overwhelmed by the fear of change. This book is for them.
Work Is not Always Bliss—and That is Okay
Let us be honest: work is work. It is not always going to be exhilarating or easy. There will be days when it feels like a grind. But that does not mean you should settle for a life where you dread every Monday or feel unappreciated and unfulfilled. You Next is about finding that sweet spot where your job aligns with your values, leverages your strengths, and positions you to grow—even if it’s not perfect every single day.
This message is particularly important for talented individuals who want to rise to their full potential. Whether you are a mid-level manager looking to help your team thrive, a transitioning military member embarking on your next chapter, or a professional at a crossroads, You Next is your roadmap. It’s a call to action for those who want more than just a paycheck—those who want a career that fits their life and goals.
Helping People Avoid the “Someday Syndrome”
I have encountered so many people who suffer from what I call the “Someday Syndrome.” “Someday, I’ll leave this job.” “Someday, I’ll st...

Rotary Thank You!
Dear Rotary Friends,
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you. You are receiving this message because YOU, YOUR CLUB, YOUR FOUNDATION, or YOUR AGENCY have made a generous monetary contribution to the Rotary District 5280 Los Angeles Wildfire Relief Fund.
Nearly a month has passed since the devastating wildfires broke out across Los Angeles. As we continue to adapt and respond to the aftermath, I’ve heard deeply moving stories from fellow Rotarians who, despite losing their homes, have found strength and hope through the outpouring of support from Rotarians worldwide. It's not just the financial assistance that has made an impact but the emotional support—your calls, texts, emails, and social media messages have provided a beacon of hope during these challenging times.
Thanks to your generosity, the funds we’ve received are already making a tangible difference. We have:
-
Supported local organizations on the frontlines, providing shelter for displaced families.
-
Distributed grocery store gift cards to families in urgent need.
-
Funded community distribution events to deliver essential supplies.
-
Provided gift cards to our courageous firefighters, many of whom slept in their cars for days to continue battling the blazes without pause.
While the fires have been contained, the path to recovery is long. We are approaching this journey in three phases:
-
Immediate Needs: Addressing urgent necessities such as shelter, food, and basic supplies.
-
Intermediate Needs: Supporting community recovery efforts and stabilizing affected families.
-
Long-Term Needs: Assisting with the rebuilding of infrastructure and restoring communities.
Our District 5280 recent humanitarian mission to Maui taught us that physical rebuilding can take months, even years. However, the emotional support and human connection we provide can have an immediate, lasting impact.
We are profoundly thankful for your support. As we continue this journey, I am committed to keeping you informed about our progress. Your monetary investment in our recovery is invaluable, and as District Governor, it is my honor and responsibility to ensure you feel connected to the difference you are making.
Together, we are walking side by side on this path of recovery and hope. Thank you for being part of our Rotary family.
With deep gratitude,
Albert Hernandez
District Governor, Rotary District 5280

Award-winning American cartoonist, Stephan Pastis, recent strip of Pears Before Swine covered the subject of “What kind of funeral do you want to have?” His characters, Rat and Goat continued the discussion with Rat once again taking the negative approach. “I don’t care.” said Rat. A number of commenters agreed with Rat. However, Commenter scote1379 said, “Pre-arrangement will save you and your Family a world of Grief, Plus you don’t feel rushed making decisions!” g.p.hardy wrote, “I work in the area of bereavement. People ‘not caring’ about what happens when they die are a huge problem for the loved ones they leave behind.” g.p.hardy is correct. You do not want to wait until there is no time left. You’ll leave people in pain at your loss, trying to figure out what you wanted. Tell your Pre-Planning Advisor what you want now
A Pre-Plan is for you to decide whether you want a traditional/casket or cremation. You can make the decisions now as to where you will be buried, or whether you want to be cremated and your ashes scattered, or whether you want a niche, a family plot, or have your own mausoleum, etc. With a Pre-Plan, you will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. As they both said, being prepared is an important part of the life you are living. I can help you prepare yourself for the inevitable no matter when it might arrive. If you plan well in advance, you will prevent your loved ones from suffering and financial costs. Don’t know where to start? Give me a call. You will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. Please call me today. I can help you just like I have assisted more than 10,000 Hawaii families and individuals make their plans for cremation or burial. And, if you travel often, you can also purchase a lifetime travel plan for $599 that, in case you should die while away from Hawaii, will pay to bring your body back – a procedure that can cost thousands of dollars and occurs more often than you may think. This is something you can do that is positive.
